For a while now, I have always thought how the Alodia and Ashley manage to get through the tsunami of people during cons and events. When I first heard about them two years ago, they were not as popular as they are today. But even then, they had really tight security. They practically had "legions" of body guards, real life "white knights" if you may. These security people have to form human barricades to clear way for the sisters. So what more today? They are literally international celebrities with a fan base extending to many countries. Alodia's Facebook Page alone boasts of a 600,000-strong community.

But I got to thinking, maybe it's not all the people. These security personnel must have tools and equipment for crowd control too. Event organizers would put up stanchions and velvet ropes on venues to keep the people in check. This is very important since safety is a top priority especially when they travel outside the country for events. And let's face it, the girls have tons of haters too. You never know when some whacko would pull off a crazy stunt or prank. It's always better to be on the safe side, I'd say.

Because of an unfortunate incident that happened to her recently, Alodia Gosiengfiao is 'forced' to spend more time at home. I think this led to her to doing a little bit more photography. She has always loved taking pictures of her dolls but since she got more and more gigs everywhere, seems that she has lost time for her macro photography.

But now that she is resting from her injury, she gets to re-kindle one of her passions. Incidentally, her subjects are flowers which I think includes the lovely ones given by her sponsores Globe and Wheatgrass, and the ones from Official 7.

She weilds a Canon EOS 450D and used a 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Lens for these shots.

If there is a dream costume I'd like to see on them Gosiengfiao sisters, Alodia and Ashley, I guess it is them wearing nursing scrubs uniforms. I know it's a very simple costume if you can even call it a costume but for me there is just something about women in nursing uniforms. I wish they would hold some sort of competition to ask the fans what what they want the sisters to cosplay and there would be a poll of some sort, I don't know. I just think it would be cool.

I'm sure it will be a pretty effortless feat for them considering that they have done several very complicated costumes and cosplays worthy enough to be in international competitions. Alodia even made cosplay a living and is now has a regular hosting gig on the country's top TV network. I don't think I've seen them do a nurse or doctor costume or something with lab coats or anything like that before. It would be interesting for them to do so though.

And if they'd choose to cosplay this, Im sure they'd find several places to get those nursing scrub uniforms like Blue Sky Scrubs.

This band was formerly Hymn Of Siren. They are now known as Yes Ma'am. Personally, I like this name more.

Kaname's thoughts on the recently concluded AFA 09 Cosplay Competition.

Sorry to take up so much of your time.

I gathered you all here because there is something I want to tell you all.

He enjoyed the cosplay competition yesterday

Today, he will talk to you about what he truly feels about yesterday's competition.

Is it okay?

Although there are three judges and the result has already been decided, he himself has his own opinion to tell you all.

Can you allow him to say which he really liked the most?

Of course he personally thinks that everyone of you is very good. It's just that everyone is so good that he can't decide. Usually, what he looks for is performance and the costumes somehow they can mix together. That's what he truly looks for as a judge. For himself and his own opinion.

He feels that the Philippine one is the good, is quite the best. Because your costume is very detailed, is very nice. He likes you because the way you cooperate with each other on stage. You coordinate. Actually all of the sections in the cosplay panel, the judge marking, all the panels he gave you full marks.

Because before, WitchBlade, he doesn't know anything about it. But thanks to you he likes it now. Actually, before this, he doesn't know WitchBlade, but what really draws him to your performance is the way you move, and coordination.

Your video is good. The way you made your costumes is very eye-catching. Your timing with the video is quite natural. What he likes about the video is the character named Shiori? He liked the way she smiles. The animation. The video. Actually, what made him decide that you're a ? is because of that smile. That last smile in the video.

Sorry but, he's not saying the others are no good, but for the other teams right, usually their ending part of whatever their performance are, he feels that it's not complete. The last part. Next time try to make use of the stage ?, the stage itself. So whatever he says, he hopes you accept it. Not only goes to yesterday's contestants, but all cosplayers who wants to do performances.

Eat eat.

In terms of video-wise, what is really eye-catching is the Lineage team and the Gundam team. He feels so moved that he would like to be part of your team. Your video is impressive but he thinks that your movement is too stiff so be more natural I guess. If it goes just by camera shot, or photo, Lineage team should be the winner. In terms of skill in making, like the technical assemble your costume, he thinks that Gundam should win.

Because in competitions right you need to match with the live video and your own performance to win and get good points. He says that all of you are good but he sees that most of your costumes is still not complete. Try to increase your performance quality. Reverse, actually, is umm if you have good costume but your performance. 'cause in competition right, good costume but performance not good, so it won't help. But performance good, costume no good, it won't work.

About Lineage: Your costume is very ? effort, and is very eye-catching because of the lighting, 'cause metallic reflecting. So if you are very ?. Although your costume is good, but because your video is very action-packed filled, but due to the bulkiness of your costume right. So the move around is bad. That's the only minus point. Feel more flexible.

He feels that actually you can win, just that you need to match up your performance, your movements and the video together. So he would like you to try, try harder next time. Your makeup is good. For the elf, who's the elf? I'm not well-versed in cosmetics so what he says is for the elf right, your makeup right, try to use a makeup that is fit for stage performance.

He looks forward to your photos. As a Lineage player, he's a Lineage player, so he says he hopes to see you online and be friends. Although he really can't play online ? but let's just be friends as Lineage players.

Your Gundam currently is at par with his whole country Japan. Cosplay. In terms of mecha, the one that is most favors in is actually Gundam. Because this time, there were two of you right? So this time it's in pair. Because it's a competition, a lot of expectation is there, so at some points minus, but he thinks you are very good as a mecha cosplayer. He feels that for your case, it's not how you coordinate with the video, but it's how you be in character. As a cosplayer, he always favors cosplayers who are faithful to the character, even the way they talk, walk and think. He say, but if you don't mind, he says he likes to improve your wig. (VIDEO 3 of 3) Sorry to say but your portrayal of the character is not exactly how he sees it. Because he feels that your distance and the Gundam distance is a bit far, so he prefers if you all get more closer.

Next time if he's already moving, maybe for like Marina, she can move closer. Of course, the thing is that Gundam is a mecha team right? Because as for Marina she's a human, so the thing is that your Gundam catches more attention than her. So he wants her to be part of the performance also, because the thing is that your Gundam is catchy on the eyes. If you can actually bring the two of you together in the performance, you'll be more impressive.

When he was in Japan, there is one thing that ? by taking shots for Gravure photoshoots, he goes alone, especially he likes together as friends, fellow cosplayers to go with him. Because in Japan, he doesn't have much cosplayers to take photos of him because he couldn't find male cosplayers who has the same views on cosplay ??. Because sometimes when he do photoshoots when everyone is cosplaying...standards. So sometimes he tends to be the one that's more outstanding and he doesn't want that. He wants everyone to be part of it. He doesn't want to be the one star.

What he really wants is everyone to actually, the cosplay level to build up together, to have a same level together. There's still one down, one up. It's better everyone work together. To build, to help each other for the cosplay standard.

He wants even for those people who have not very great cosplay, but he wants the low ones to come up. For Gundam, he wants you to be more, to match up with Marina. Same up, same up. That is... if you can achieve that, I think you can be very good. For this competition, the one that is overall in his favor is WitchBlade. This of course, is not true. Or at least, I refuse to believe so. But the guy who said Alodia was disqualified claims this.

He claims to get the news from Irene Cullen. For those who are not familiar who these people are, Irene Cullen has been a detractor of GamerTotoy and his blog for several months now.

This picture also claims that Irene is also the source of the Aloia is disqualified news. That is somehow related tho this:

Ambitious and funny as the claim may be, it is still very interesting what the turn of events will be. Of course, ultimate resolution will be achieved in nine months if Alodia gives birth, lol. I just wonder how Alodia and Ashley will react if and when they see this.

Alodia is DQ (disqualified) on Singapore Contest?

I saw this last night plurked by our dear Ashley Gosiengfiao. Get ready for intense English. You have been warned. *wipes nose after reading*

He is saying that Alodia (and sister Ashley) can be disqualified for not making their own costumes for the AFA's.

First - grammar. I mean seriously. I am not infallible in written and spoken English. Far from it. But I am confident I write and speak well enough to make sense and get my point across. If you can't construct an English sentence properly and make sense, mag-tagalog ka! Hindi bawal mag-tagalog sa Internet!

Also, there is a grammar check on MS Word, please use it. No, I am not an uptight jerk, but its things like these that make the Internet evil. We know he had a hard time writting the piece and his readers are going to have a harder time reading it.

Second- the news. I don't even know where he got the news but I doubt its validity. Stuff like these would come from the sisters first undoubtedly.

Third - making your own costume. Being a non-cosplayer, at first I thought it was a sound rule to disqualify anyone who doesn't make his own costume. BTW, I was only introduced to the culture of cosplaying through the sisters and the Internet. I haven't even attended a convention. But I think having that particular rule would be well, stupid.

It is given that cosplayers should have a great deal of involvement on the fabrication of their customes but they should not be expected to make the entire custome by themselves. I doubt true blue Japanese Otaku/cosplayers do. (Jap. otaku? redundant? lol) If cosplayers make their costumes only by themselves, then awesome cosplays would be limited to good fabricators only.

On the other hand, if a cosplayer is not involved on his costume at all, I don't think he can be a cosplayer. he or she would just be a model.

And the sisters are great examples of cosplayers. While they don't make their entire customes, they are heavily involved in the fabrication. They make their props and take care of their wigs and make up and stuff.

disclaimer: I am not an Alodia white knight of sorts. I am not here to bash on every Alodia hater. I am a fan, yes. But I am also a believer of difference of opinions. I know some people hate Alodia and that's fine. I even read GamerTotoy's blog and enjoy it.

But this one somehow got me to post it here for some reason.

Having cosplayed for six years and running, Alodia Gosiengfiao has cosplayed dozens of characters. And cosplayed them all, she did. But there are those that really get mroe attention and fans take notice more.

For me, its a couple of cosplays that really impressed me. Oddly enough, both are Halloween-themed. But it has nothing to do with the holiday two weeks ago.

Self-confessed Paramwhore, Ashley Gosiengfiao has another brainchild.

Ashley Gosiengfio created a new music blog focusing entirely on Paramore. This is certainly good news for her fans especially for those who are more interested in her music. She currently has another Tumblr music blog housing some of her covers and original songs.

She said the idea came to her on a plane-ride from the province while she was bored and listening to her iPod. Anyway, I'll let her give it to you, this is the first entry of the Ashley - Haley Project:

I was on the plane back to Manila yesterday from my mom’s hometown, Catarman, when a sort-of genius plan suddenly hit me, or at least I’d like to think it was. I did the usual, the thing I always did on plane rides, on boring trips, in the bathroom, before going to sleep, or whenever my ears were vacant. I whipped out my iPod (my friend’s, actually, ‘cause mine’s been broken for a few months now) and hit the play button on my D: Paramore playlist, D for discography if you haven’t figured that out yet.

As I was listening to Playing God and trying to break down the different tracks one by one in my head as I’d planned to record a cover song of it next, I suddenly recalled watching Julie and Julia a couple of weeks back, and how Julie had completed a recipe or two from Julia’s cookbook a day and blog about it.

Then it hit me. I’ve been covering Paramore’s songs for a few years now. Then I thought, why not make a project out of it, too, like Julie did? Of course I wouldn’t be able to update everyday since studying and recording songs is quite tedious, and my skills aren’t anywhere near the gods’, oh I mean Paramore’s. But it’s still worth a shot, right? It’s gonna be a good excuse, too, to be able to cover as many Paramore songs as I want. Teehee!

And who knows. They might even hear about this blog and hate me about it too, just like how Julia hated Julie’s Julia blog. I hope not haha. I’m pretty sure they won’t, though. They’re very friendly to their fans! I am indeed one huge Parawhore. Been one for the past 5 or 6 years I think. Back when nobody knew about them yet. I remember singing Conspiracy with my band in high school and everyone thinking it was one of our originals. Haha. How I wish.

I’m pretty sure that I won’t be falling out of love with the band in this lifetime, which is why I’ve decided to invest my time in this. I’m also hoping that in this way, Paramore would be helping me improve on my musicality, even in the most indirect way possible. Geez, I’m such a fan.

I just know that this project is going to be epic. I just KNOW it!!! *crosses fingers*

Oh and about the blog name, Ashley and Hayley? I chose it ‘cause it sounds a lot better than Ashley and Paramore. It rhymes! *gets the chills lol*

Yes, it has been confirmed that the Gosiengfiao Sisters will be at the Anime Festival Asia 2009. Their Witchblade cosplay entry got in and they will be represting The Philippines.

About Anime Festival Asia 2009:

(Singapore, September 1st, 2009) – The organizers of Anime Festival Asia 2009 (AFA09) are excited to announce the region’s most impressive festival targeting fans of Japanese animation and popular culture. Taking place at Suntec International Convention and Exhibition Centre (Halls 403 and 404) from 21st to 22nd November, AFA09 will incorporate a one-day business conference, Animation Asia Conference 2009 (AAC09) held on 20th November at the same venue.

Latest cosplay news from cosplay duo Alodia Gosiengfiao and Ashley Gosiengfiao: they will be doing a cosplay skit for popular anime: Witchblade.

But what is Witchblade? I must admit, I was not very familiar with Witchblade when I first heard it. The name sounded cool but I didn't know what it was. So I quickly searched the net for cosplay galleries for Witchblade galleries. I also looked for some Witchblade episodes. My first impression was the lady characters were hot - only suiting for Ashley and Alodia.

Anyway here is what Wikipedia has to say about Witchblade:

Witchblade (ウィッチブレイド, Uitchibureido?) is an anime series based on the American comic book by the same name. Instead of an adaptation of the original story, the producers decided to create an entire new setup, with all new characters...

"Sought by the greed of men since the dawn of human kind, but only bestowed upon the women whose fate it forever scars... The Witchblade. Is it the righteous sword of God? Or hand of the Devil himself. Now a new bearer has been chosen. And she must discover the answers for herself. As she stands on the brink of destiny, she is forced to seek the balance between ecstasy and ruin."

Here is Alodia's description of the cosplay skit from figure.fm:

All weapons are made out entirely of fiberglass and lights will be incorporated. The protruding parts of the costume is made out of foam and fiberfill. We are using face paint, brightly colored contact lenses and make-up to imitate facial features of the characters. :]

Brief Description of the Skit:
A tank enters the area, wreaking havoc all about in search for fresh human blood. Cannon balls are fired. Walls (made of foam and styrofoam) are destroyed. Rubble scatters. Then, Masane comes in to save the day by stabbing the tank with her blade. She walks away. Victory! Or so she thought. Little did she know that Shiori snuck out of the tank to strike her from behind.

A fight scene (with stunts) takes place. The clashing of the blades can be heard. Shiori's weapon lights up, indicative of the energy building up, which would all be directed towards Masane's frame.

Masane falls, and as she hits the ground, a voice suddenly plays in her head. "Mama! Get up!", shouts the voice of a child. The child who she had come to call her own.

The voice gives her strength. There is an audible build-up of a massive amount of energy. Her blades light up. And then, she strikes back.

Victory! And this time it was for sure.

I believe this will be their entry for AFA09 - Anime Festival Asia 2009 for the Regional Cosplay Championship where they will have competitors from Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia. The Anime Festival Asia will be held on November 21 - 22. I really love to see them cosplay together in pairing characters like the Magic Gunner Rikku and Magic Gunner Yuna FFX-2 cosplay and the Black Mage / White Mage cosplay.

Redefine Exhibit Will Be Pushing Through

After Redefine was postponed due to some unfortunate events that hit our country, it will finally be pushing through this time.

There are some things that are deeply iconic that it becomes almost blasphemous to even attempt to alter or reinvent them. Such is the case with the ‘little black dress’.

The ‘little black dress’ is an evening or cocktail dress cut simply that originated in the 1920s and was made popular by Coco Chanel. Intended to be a versatile, and timeless piece of clothing, it became just that, even evolving into a “staple item” in every woman’s wardrobe.

At present, there have been many variations of the little black dress. With fashion having such an affinity to trend and change, there have been numerous styles and looks of the dress. However, the concept of the little black dress has seldom been interpreted outside the fashion world. And because art strives to break molds and never plays on the safe side of things, by giving a group of young contemporary artists a little black dress as their point of inspiration. We follow the creative process as they push forth to birth a redefinition in perspectives through working with different mediums.

Redefine is an exhibition that showcases Raleene Cabrera, Ashley Gosiengfiao, Carina Santos, King Salazar, Jobe Nkemakolam and Addie Sullivan and their no holds barred approach in deviating from the point A to point X.

Ashley Gosiengfiao Music Blog

Ashley Gosiengfiao recently made a Tumblr music blog to store and share her music. I guess she won't be using her imeem and MySpace account for music anymore. I like this better than imeem anyway. Its more user-friendly and its easier to the eyes.

She does new covers of some songs she covered before and she is really good. She also has some techno songs from her MySpace account. What I like about her covers is that she does all the parts of the song -vocals and instruments and also the mixing except for collaborations of course.

Being a music lover myself, I am glad she's doing more songs now. The songs on her blog are mostly acoustics. I guess she uses beat-makers on her Mac to do the drum and bass parts for the full song covers. I hope she'll progress to full studio recordings and branch out of Paramore covers too. (Im not a Paramore fan)

The blog also has download links for the songs but I really hate using Megaupload, Rapidshare, Megashare and all similar download methods. I use this more convenient way.

Alodia collaborated fellow DA members LifeClicker and demitasse-lover and came up with a series of art work. They are selling prints at MangaBullet and proceeds will go to the victims of Ondoy/Ketsana.

Ashley along with the guys from Redefine came out with an announcement for those planning to attend the Redefine exhibit this October.

It’s been a little manic, well more than manic, over here in Manila the past couple of days. We were hit by the horrendous Typhoon Ondoy and the aftermath is nothing short of a nightmare.

In light of what has been going on, the exhibition production has been stalled to help out those in greater need. Opening night will not push through on October 5. We will keep everyone updated accordingly and ASAP.

The recent tropical storm Ondoy left hundreds dead and more still affected and in need of our help. It is good to know that everyone is doing their part to help out.

Alodia and Ashley Gosiengfiao along with their friends donated clothes, food and other relief goods for the victims of typhoon Ondoy. Ashley then headed to GK Bagong Silang for deployment.

Ashley on Redefine!

Embracing the artist in her, Ashley will be joining the Redefine team. She recently posted initial details on her latest DA Journal.

What is Redefine?

The project is a group exhibition of 4 young contemporary artists evoking the reinterpretation of a classic black dress (simple sleeveless, scoop cocktail dress a la Audrey Hepburn), with regard to the artist’s perspective. Conceptualized and managed by a curatorial team from the Ateneo de Manila University, It will feature a variety of traditional and contemporary media and the artworks will range in size as well.

In taking something as iconic as the ‘Little Black Dress’ the artists delve into what lies behind the general knowledge of the item to somehow discern something new, something surprising, whether it be in the realm of the utility of the black dress or the metaphorical meaning of the black dress qualified in personal perspectives, or even social perspectives.

The purpose of the exhibition is, fundamentally, to show the movement of the creative process through the process of reinterpretation. Reinterpretation aids many creative ventures such as music, film, literature, fashion and the visual arts. Music in particular is one of the art forms where reinterpretation and reinvention occurs, through the practice of “cover songs”. Many contemporary musicians have found inspiration through “throw backs” of older songs, revamping them to suit their own sound and coming up with something that is ultimately, completely of their artistic doing.

There is an added challenge in reinterpreting what is already considered as classic and timeless. In doing so, the exhibition aims to push boundaries on what an object is already widely known as. There is more that meets the eye in most things, and things sometimes have a way of exceeding what they are at face value- sometimes, a dress is not just a dress.

Wow Alodia is really, really busy these days with her website features and interviews and all. Now, she will also be blogging for local tech website Techie.com.ph.

I was not even aware of the website (which is very good BTW) before this. Good thing Alodia was chosen as their model. They had a teaser for a model earlier and it turned out that it will be our local cosplay queen. An excellent choice; no one would be more appropriate for the spot than her.

Alodia will be on MOG TV on TV 5. She is really getting more and more mainstream TV exposure. She had an interview today for the show.

Hosted by Sam YG and Dianne Sison, MOG TV follows a gaming and technology based format to cater to the ever-expanding gaming community. MOG TV stands for More on Gaming and so far its the only Video Game-oriented TV in the country.

Don't forget to catch the show on Friday at 11:30pm on TV5. It will air on September 11, 2009. Maybe she'll be sporting her GI Joe: The Baroness costume.

The Gosiengfiao House Used in Mainstream TV

It is no secret to their biggest fans that the Gosiengfiao House Used in Mainstream TV. After all they have a gorgeous abode. The sisters themselves mentioned it once or twice. You can see for yourself - I think it was used on this Animax commercial and for this Magna Carta shoot.

This got me thinking which shows actually use their house. Its mainstream TV, so it must be on either GMA or ABS-CBN right?

Lazy holiday yesterday I saw GMA's Ngayon at Kailanman and noticed the beautiful house and immediately thought of the Gosiengfiao residence because of this video and the beautiful balcony on the show. And I think its possible. Their house might be used for this show. But I am not sure though.

Another reason to celebrate on August 5 (apart form GMA declaring it a non-working holiday). Alodia Gosiengfiao will be on the re-scheduled radio show Brewrats on Wednesday, August 5.
